Four of our Year 10 students – Mihaela-Adelina, Nadia, Sana and Zakiyya – entered a STEM competition at Westholme school recently. (STEM covers the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.) Up against 21 other schools from across Lancashire, they undertook four time-controlled practical challenges. These included: complex chemistry and biology investigations; the construction of an Archimedes screw to transport Rice Krispies up a Perspex tube; and building a bridge with large wooden blocks to span a gap between two tables. All this was in parallel with answering a very difficult Maths Crossnumber challenge! While not winning a trophy (or prize mug), they always kept going with great resilience throughout and were excellent representatives for Witton Park Academy.
