Witton Park Academy is committed to providing an inclusive education for all.
We believe that the curriculum should meet the needs of all students regardless of ability, culture or background and that with the correct support and intervention every student can succeed. Our Learning Support Department has specially trained staff that support students in lessons, work 1:1 with students and also in small groups to ensure those who could benefit from extra support receive it.
The Learning Support Department liaise closely with Primary School’s prior to students arriving in our School. The team visits feeder primary schools and runs additional transition sessions for students who may find the transition between primary and secondary school difficult. The SENCO or SEN Manager also attends annual reviews for students with an IPRA or EHCP in order to ensure all appropriate information is gathered to put the right support is put in place
We work together closely with parents, as parental involvement is invaluable in addressing and identifying our individual student’s needs.
We endeavour to identify any special educational needs as early as possible and offer appropriate support in terms of resources and teacher time. Modern facilities aim to provide full access to students with physical difficulties. Ramps are provided to all entrances and exits and there are lifts available in school. There are also several disabled accessible bathrooms around the school and three rooms equipped with lifts and hoists to ensure safe moving and handling of students with physical difficulties.
Students on the SEN Register are monitored closely through Reading and Spelling tests and the use of assessment data. This enables us to put in appropriate intervention to help students close the gaps with their peers. The school also has access to outside agencies who can offer further support to our students. These agencies include;
- Educational Psychology
- School Nurse
- Inclusion Support Service (advisory teachers)
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- ELCAS (adolescent mental health service)
The Learning Support Faculty provides the necessary support for all students in achieving their full potential and is a fundamental contributor to the improving academic performance of the School.
